EAROPH 2015 Regional Seminar in JAPAN
EAROPH 2015 Regional Seminar in JAPAN (Ureshino/Saga)
Characteristics of Saga Prefecture and Ureshino City
Saga Prefecture is located at western part of Japan and near to Korean Peninsula by 200 km, and significantly closed to EAROPH member countries. Saga Prefecture has a long history of porcelain industry. and a large amount of its product was exported to South-East Asia as well as Europe for 100 years from the end of 17th century. Saga Prefecture is located at crossroads of major transportation networks as highways and railroads, and less than one hour to Fukuoka, the gateway city to Asian countries.
Ureshino City at south-west of Saga Prefecture is expanded at the river basin of Shiota-Gawa, and has 28 thousand inhabitants and 126.51 k㎡ land area. 45% of land is occupied by forest hills. There are many hot springs with high quality along the river of Shiota-Gawa and these hot springs have extended the urbanization of Ureshino City. Each Ryokan, Japanese style hotel, with hot spring has many visitors from foreign countries as well as all over Japan. This hot spring attracted the medical facility in 1930s and this facility has the regional function at present. The hilly area surrounding the basin is occupied by the spectacular tea plantation which is very famous in Japan and one of major industries in Ureshino City. Agricultural industry such as rice and wheat plantation is performed along the downstream of Shiota-River, and in addition, the historical buildings are grouped at Shiota village faced to Shiota-River.
The strategy for urban development and management of Ureshino City is to focus on the local resources as tea plantation, hot springs, Shinkansen to be operated in 2022, and to reorganize and to systematize these resources for future vibrant society.
